Fine Arts

It is the desire of Summit Christian to instill the joy of life-long creativity and continued participation in the Fine and Applied Arts.

The goal of the Summit Christian School Fine and Applied Arts Department is to identify God-given talents within the student and to cultivate the techniques and skills necessary for excellence in meaningful Christ-centered expression, whether that includes preparing for a career or a lifetime of continued enjoyment.

The Fine and Applied Arts Department spans the curriculum at Summit Christian School giving students a variety of creative outlets in both elective classroom settings and extracurricular activities.  Many of these individuals and groups have participated in FACCS Fine Arts Festivals, which are offered regionally and at the state level to encourage artistic excellence for the glory of God.  Our choirs, thespians, photographers, and artists have received numerous awards at the annual Festivals.  Yearbooks from SCS have also been noted for their excellence.  Students are encouraged to grow spiritually in their creativity and talent as they practice serving God, our Creator.

Summit Christian Elementary Music Classes
Music is a fun and rewarding part of elementary education, giving memories to last a lifetime. Elementary music class is a place where students can enjoy making music.  Students learn about matching pitch, steady beat, rhythmic ostinato, and other musical fundamentals by singing folk songs, spirituals, rounds and composed songs.  Students play and create rhythms on a variety of drums and percussion instruments.  They play beautiful melodies and ostinatos on xylophones and metallophones.  Singing games and dances are not only fun, but they teach students musical concepts through play.  Older students love the challenge of learning new songs on the recorder.  They can earn a series of multi-colored “belts” to help them show their success.  As the grade level increases, so does the skill level.  The older grades play more challenging ensemble music.  Musical skill is then demonstrated as the students sing, play, act, and dance in two yearly elementary productions.

Summit Christian Junior High Choir
The Junior High Choir is comprised of students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades who enjoy singing in a group setting.  Using a variety of repertoire written specifically for the needs of the changing voice, the choir members learn healthy vocal technique which include good posture and breathing, focused and relaxed sound, and the proper use of the head voice.  Students learn to develop the inner ear through aural training and sight-singing.  The choir prepares music in two or three parts to present at several performances throughout the year.  The choir participates annually in the FACCS Jr. Fine Arts Festival and Summit’s annual Christmas Stroll.

Summit Christian High School Choirs
The High School Choir is comprised of students in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades who enjoy singing in a group setting.  The students learn healthy vocal techniques, ear training, and sight-singing, in addition to a variety of choral literature.  It is the goal of this choir to foster the love of singing and to produce lifelong participation and leadership in music.  Choir members may elect to have extra rehearsals after school in which the ninth graders are given the opportunity to learn the concert literature.  The choir performs regularly at school concerts, chapels, the annual Christmas Stroll, and the Harriet Himmel Theater in City Place.  The highlight of the year is participation in Disney’s Candlelight Concert at Epcot Center (which is strictly an auditioned opportunity) during the Christmas season.  The choir participates annually in the FACCS Fine Arts Festival in Jacksonville, FL.  Outstanding musicians also have the opportunity to perform solo and ensemble musical selections at this festival.

Summit Christian Theatrical Guild
Drama is offered as a Middle School Elective and other students who are interested in theater have the opportunity to participate and refine their talents as an extracurricular opportunity.  Students are exposed to all aspects of theater production including: set design, sound and lighting, stage crew management, direction, auditioning, and acting.  The students are encouraged to experience a positive environment, which enables and encourages creativity.  Students participate in skits, plays, dramatic readings and recitations( many with spiritual emphasis) which are initially performed at chapels and concerts to prepare them for the FACCS Fine Arts Festivals and the annual Christmas Stroll.  Many of our students have been selected for participation in local movie projects, including The Prince and the Pauper and Turkles. The Theatre Department produces two major dramas and musicals each year.   Past productions include: Annie Jr., (which also gave upper elementary students the opportunity to participate); The Importance of Being Ernest; Little Women; Cinderella, Cinderella!; The Little MermaidA Christmas Carol and Willy Wonka, TYA.

Summit Christian Worship Teams
The Worship Team is a group of musicians, singers, and technicians who lead in worship during the weekly chapel services.  In the classroom, students are mentored in their personal spiritual walk while they prepare music from the contemporary Christian genre.  Spiritual maturity and leadership are important factors in being considered for participation; therefore, interested students must complete a musical audition and a personal interview.  Students have participated in guitar, keyboard, bass, drum playing, singing, power point preparation, and sound technology.  The grade levels included may vary according to yearly scheduling.  The goal of this course is not only to facilitate leadership in a meaningful student worship experience, but also to encourage lifelong leadership in church musical settings.

Summit Christian Visual Arts
Secondary students in the Visual Arts program at Summit Christian School gain experience in a variety of media and techniques such as acrylic painting, relief printing, still-life and figure drawing, papier-mâché, sculpture and collage. Emphasis is placed on the elements and principles of design so that students can learn not only how to produce successful artwork, but also how to analyze and discuss art from all historical periods, genres, and schools of thought. Students take part in discussions about major artists' work, their influences on art and how to have a Christ-centered approach to the art world. Students participating in this program may also be involved in the set design for many of the productions put on by the Theatre department and annual Christmas Stroll outreach. Students in the Visual Arts department have received numerous regional and state awards. The first SCS student to receive a national award was Ashely Somogyi in 2005.

Summit Christian Yearbook
This course offer juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn and utilize graphic design technologies and sharpen their English and communication skills under specific deadlines, giving the students the satisfaction of seeing a finished product. The Image Yearbook Staff captures photographs, interviews students and staff, covers on and off-campus events, writes informative and entertaining stories, conducts surveys and wraps it all up into a beautiful hardbound book that documents the school year. Students use graphic design principles and learn the history and practical application of typography in publishing. The staff strives to create a book that is complete as well as unified in theme and style from beginning to end. All of this is accomplished while students learn how to be responsible leaders and group members of a creative team.
